English GCSE with coursework?

DS (just started yr 10) has come home from school today saying they will now be doing an English exam board that is 30% coursework.

Does anyone know what this might be? He says teacher is going to email out some more information as they have just changed to this but always nice to get some ideas / opinion from outside of school too!

Is it an independent school? They often do IGCSE.

Yeah sounds like iGCSE, if it's a private school

sounds like what my dd is doing, she isn't taking the option of coursework as far as I know.
Mine is doing Cambridge igcse.

Has to be IGCSE. None of the GCSE English specs have coursework now.

Thanks for the responses. Yes it's a non selective private school that has quite a lot of children with additional needs. I thought it might be an igcse. Do any of you know if igcses are all 9 - 1 now or are they still letters?

DD did Eduqas GCSE this year and that included a course work speaking assessment.

DS did CIE Eng Lang a few years ago and that was all final assessment but there are other options and the course work option is usually taken by schools like your DDs. It's also a good option for college students who need to get a pass for vocational courses. People are sniffy about it on MN but I think it's good that there is still an option for struggling students, it isn't as if anyone will use the results to get on to the English course at Durham.

cakeisalwaystheanswer you're right, for a lot of these kids it's about getting a pass so they can go on to access the course they want post 16. DS definitely won't be reading English at an RG Uni!

Yes, iGCSE can have 50% done by coursework I believe.

I'm not sure on the new grades as this September they've withdrawn the ofqual validated iGCSE and are only offering the non validated one. I think there's the option for both as last time I looked at iGCSE there was a notice box saying centres had to choose which they wanted when they registered but they had to make any changes between 9-1/A-G before the entry deadline. It might be worth asking your school.
