Secondary school allocated place offered.

I have been allocated a school place I am unhappy with . I have found out a few of my waiting list position's. Just wanted to know previous experiences of waiting lists and what are the chance of being offered a place.

I'm 233 on kingsdale Foundation school
I'm 82 for Chestnut Grove.

I'm not in your area but my friends dc was 49th last year and got offered a place a few days before the start of term and another friends 28th and also got a place. We are currently 49th up from 65th on offer day. Im hopeful we will keep moving in the right direction.

I would say you have no chance of getting either school

In our area it depends on the popularity of the school and the size of the intake as to how much waiting lists move. Looking at Chestnut Grove on the web of the 180 places 30 are based on art ability and 30 on MFL ability and the remainder of 120 are non ability places so whichever category you are in being 82 on the list isn’t that brilliant. Sorry.

You can ask to go on the waiting list of other schools even if you hadn’t put them on your original CAF.

I agree and would say you have a virtually non existent chance of a place. Are there any other schools you can join the waiting list of before 2nd allocation day.

Last year DD got her third choice school. She was 44th for her second choice and 110th for her first choice. We were offered her second choice a couple of days before the end of the summer term (but declined it as we felt it was too late to be getting her used to a different school). She was still 89th on the W/L for first choice school in December (of Year 7). So we took her off it.

It seems unlikely that you will get either of your preferred choices, from those waiting list positions, as both of those schools are very popular choices.

Which borough are you in? There’s some useful discussions on the East Dulwich Forum about secondary school places and Kingsdale allocations, with the Southwark admissions officer giving helpful advice. The Kingsdale admissions system is so complicated it’s very difficult to say - as well as the waiting list there is the banding, and the music and sports scholarships.

Chestnut Grove I can at least point you in the direction of information for, so you can get a good idea of your chances.

It's down to how many places there are for your childs band (A-E) as offer distances fluctuate a lot depending on siblings.

If the waiting list is for your child's specific band, then being 82nd is not great I'm afraid. After sibling and art/language places, there are less than 20 places to offer for each band.

Burntwood is OK and has historically offered out to 4km distance and more, if that's any good to the OP. Is single sex (girls) though.

I think the 'banding' system makes the waiting list issue much more complicated. FWIW DD's first choice secondary school operated selection (not academic) and banding. She started off at 110th (or something similar). Even when we took her off the WL at the end of December she was still only 89th.

Sometimes you just have to be realistic about what you are offered.
In an ideal world we all want our DC to go to the 'best' school but for most (particularly in London) it's not necessarily going to happen.

Of the six we put on DD's CAF, only one (the local comp) was a 'dead cert'. If we hadn't included that one we may well have received no offers on 1 March. That was always my worry.

punithasudhagar you would be better off starting a new thread for your query (as it's not really directly related to the subject matter of this one). Also, if you plot schools on a map of SW London you will see which areas would be best to live, based on what your budget is.
