Naming Sports Kit - Secondary School

Hi everyone.

Its that time of year again and I have decided now to get all my DS's clothing named for this school year as I do every year. For all his clothes (and bags, coats, etc.) I am using these brilliant 1 inch high name labels (ID tags) from Cash's as I have done for all his clothing since primary school.

To label his sports kit (the same way I have done in primary school) I am planning to sew the 1 inch name labels onto the outside of all his sports gear and sports bag. This means for sports tops, the 1 inch label will be on the outside horizontally across his right chest and for leg clothes (e.g. sports shorts, tracksuit, swimming trunks), the 1 inch label will be on the outside horizontally across his right thigh. I have labelled his sports clothes like this ever since he started primary school and up to now I have never ever lost a piece of DS's sports kit :). I'm sure my DS couldn't give two cents as to how his clothes are labelled (as long as he doesn't lose them!), but as he is now entering year 10 and is 14, I am wondering if this is still a good way to label his sports gear? What do you think? If you have labelled clothes like this before, please speak up!

p.s. The school does not require specific labelling locations for sports kit, but of course says that everything must be labelled.

Hmm not if its not what is specified. He'll have the * ripped out of him at aged 14!

Put the labels inside !

Our school had to have name embroidered formally on the outside. This was bril. It was normal do not a source of pisstake. Though ds did get mega ribbed by his friendly rugby teacher when he forgot his kit and turned up labelled " s Mohammed " or similar !

I think that if he hasn't complained during years 7-9 then you are OK to continue in y10.

I was going to say, not to name like that for secondary as it is 'different' and secondary kids don't like 'different'. But you've done it for 3 years without any complaint ...

Mine were all labelled where they were easy to spot so inside collars and inside the front waistband of trousers etc because you see that when you pull them up your legs.

Everything was on the inside except the reversible sports top which I sewed to the bottom hem in a vertical fashion with his first name on the "outside" and surname on the inside.

In our secondary you wouldn't be allowed to slap a label so brazenly over a chest but all my son's labels can be looked out without someone removing said item to check name label.

All ds' stuff is marked simply with his initials on the care label using a Sharpie.

Not lost anything yet and he's just started S5 (= Y12) - and he does a lot of sport, so repeated changes of clothing.

That's included the week away skiing.

That reminds me - I'd better go and attack his new school shirts with the Sharpie

My son's school ask new y7s to have their PE kit labelled like that, 1 inch labels on the outside. So they probably carry on wearing those items for a while (they brought it in after my son joined the school, so he doesn't). If it's not been a problem up till now, it's probably still fine - why don't you ask him?

(It does not stop items labelled like this being lost, but it does make it easier to find your own when going through the lost property boxes!)
