Combined English Lit/Lang A Level

Does anyone know if this is as well regarded as English Lit on its own?

My DD is doing it and has successfully had offers for History for all five of her UCAS choices including a couple of 'good universities'.

It depends what your DC wants to do afterwards. It is not as universally accepted as a straight English Lit A level, particularly if they want to go on and study English at Uni. Many Russell group universities don't want English Lang combined or stand alone, although some will accept it.

If there's a possibility that she might want to do English at university choose Literature. We have plenty of students applying who've done Lang & Lit and they're shockingly I'll-prepared. Many have no experience of studying whole texts - they've only ever read extracts .

I think she perhaps might like to do some kind of writing in the future.

The Lang/Lit studies The Handmaid's Tail and The Kite Runner whereas the Lit is Shakespeare, Great Gatsby and Thomas Hardy. There seems to be a big difference. I personally would be more interested in studying the Lit books.

Agree with pp - if she wants to keep English open as an option at university then go for Lit. She can always pick up language modules as part of her degree.
