Yr 9 progress/achievement grades - two systems?

My dd has just brought home her targets and achievement for the first half term. I understand the ones that are numbered as this seems to follow the SATs levels, but some have now got letters. For example, at the end of last term in one subject she got a 6c - now she's working at an E+ and is expected to be at C by the end of the year. In another she got 6a which is now a C- and C+ by the end of the year.

Can anyone shed any light on this system and how the letters correspond with the previous numbers?

The letters might equate to GCSE grades (not what they'd expect her to get in Y11, but the current level of her work).
However, I thought that a NC 6c (37 point equivalent) was roughly a GCSE grade C/D, and a NC 6a (41 point equivalent) was a GCSE grade C, so that wouldn't tie in with the grades you've been given.

Also, a child in Y9 will be doing GCSEs in 2017, marked on a number scale, so that would make even less sense.

I think the school must have its own system.
