How much revision is "normal" for yr8 end of year tests?

I'm really struggling with DS1 and I'm not sure if it's him or me!

I was a proper swot at school, in top sets and tests worried me. I did enough work to make sure I knew it all/would usually come top.

Ds1 is much more "normal". Middle sets and does the minimum he can get away with. Pleased if he does well in a test but not at all bothered if he doesn't. This frustrates me because I believe (being his mum) that he's actually quite bright and not meeting his potential. He's one of those quiet children who does Ok and doesn't cause anyone any trouble. His teachers generally seem to like him, feel he could work harder but there aren't any sanctions if he doesn't.

Anyway, I've tried to show him how to plan a revision timetable and make sure he does his best in exams. It is not going well. He insists no-one else does it, his teachers haven't told him he needs to etc.

What is normal?

DS just read through his books from the year.
Others worked through half term.

My DD is Y7 and has end of year tests next week. She claims she doesn't need to revise because she's "already done it." Totally missing the point of revision. She's fairly bright but obviously will do better if she revises.

Part of me thinks that Y7 & 8 are the years to learn the hard way, but I am struggling to sit back and leave her to it.

Will be watching this thread with interest.

What are the consequences of doing well/badly?

I'd also be interested to know this. I assume there are some, otherwise what's the point in sitting them. Are they just to measure the teachers?

It's unlikely DD will do badly enough that she'll move down a set. I just don't like her getting into the habit of not needing to revise because it will matter in the future. Maybe I'm being a bit hard on her.

Ds's school starts GCSE and BTec work in year 9, so end of year 8 exams are important in that you want to be in the top set for them.( He is at a school where you really want to be in the top set......). But apart from that, it's just practice and showing what you can do, surely? And if you don't need to revise, then why revise?

I've got one just finished Yr13, 1 in Yr 10 and 1 in Yr7 - I've never seen any serious revision before GCSEs.
Some staff set them something as homework that helps them revise, but without that, not a lot has gone on in this house.
