Secondary education

understanding schools' ofsted report

Due to an unfortunate incident on a school trip, there was an emergency Ofsted inspection in December. The report was pretty scathing with the final paragraph reading:

"In light of the findings of the inspection, inspectors conclude that pupils at the school are not safe, especially when on school trips abroad"

My concern is not regarding my child's safety, but regarding what repercussions this could have for the school. There are many special needs kids at the school, some of who receive funding from local council to cover tuition. The report was not clear as to what the next steps would be. I do not know how you find out about that.

Any suggestions regarding on how to find any of this information out, would be helpful.

Ofsted safety concerns are a bit silly after an unfortunate event. Their safety is likely to be much improved now, no?

I read Ofsted reports for schools I know very well and I honestly don't recognise them.

Email the head and voice your concerns.

Primary or secondary? Does seem a bit like locking the stable door after the horse has bolted!

There should be recommendations on what the school needs to do to improve. They will have to draw up a plan and be monitored. It sounds like they did not have a school visits and journeys policy and stick to it. If the school has lots of SEN children, clearly this level of detail is vital for all concerned.

I assume it is an independent school as it has funded LA pupils. I would not imagine these children could be found alternative placements and their statement will name your school anyway. You cannot assume anything will improve unless the Head and Governors knuckle down and do what they are legally supposed to do, ie ensure the safety of the pupils. I am sure they now know what they should do and they should share their plans with the parents.
