First secondary school parent's evening

Im off to my first secondary school parent's evening. I am seeing 6 teachers and have a 5 minute slot with each.

What's the best way to spend those 5 minutes? I don't have any worries about him- Im just going to check he's making progress and working hard. As he's in secondary I never check his homework and he doesn't really discuss school work bar asking me to buy ingredients for food technology so I don't really know much about school apart from the fact that he's in A set for all subjects that are set.

Did you get a report just prior to the parent's eve? Usually they mark for attitude and achievement.
Unless you have any questions I would just listen to what the teachers say, they will sometimes say a little more than the generic stuff that goes on a report.

ALWAYS check homework.NEVER stop
ask if what his target level is and if he will hit it. If not why not

If you are not worried, then just see what they say, and hope your recognize your child in their assessment.

Lookout for common themes across subjects and any coded messages Grin

Ask simply that, is he making progress and working hard!

Ask if he's happy!

That is also very important - especially if he is not given to saying much about school in general.

He's a social butterfly and has friends round so I can check them out and gets invited back but is he happy seems to be an obvious question. Doh! Thanks

Ours was a waste of time for both teachers and us.
We are at a big International school. DD is the only western child there so is pretty unmissable.
Some teachers (my DH included) were checking the photographs of the students before they spoke to the parents.

Checking. That's ok. I'd find a detailed analysis on each kids target current, strength and weaknesses. Still wanted to check. It's very frantic seeing 45 kids in 3 hours.

ime secondary appointments are very short. The teacher cuts to the chase and a lot more direct than the primary school flim flam there is little need for questions unless one arises in your mind as s/he talks.
