Apologies for the random question but this has been bugging me for a while. All through our summer of sport we have heard how sports and team games are vital for our children and how competitive sports are character building and will be the making of them.
However my recollection of school sports 22 year ago is completely different - week in week out watching teams being picked by the same sporty kids and being one of the last 3 to be picked every week. Rather than being character building it was soul destroying.
Yes, I hated sport so can't have been easy to teach, plus my parents didn't encourage me either so I'm not completely blaming the schools.
Now as mum to dd1 (who I hope will be a little more sporty for her sanity's sake), can I expect PE lessons to be any different? Is there more understanding of those who are not naturally talented? I know I'll have my part to play in encouraging her to find something she enjoys - her dad skis and does triathlons so these will be options, and I would love to have a go in a velodrome although I'm concerned I'm not fit enough for a taster session!
