Counselling?

Hi all, my husband and I have had a lot of problems and he has finally agreed we need help. I have looked into counselling and will book an appointment today but I guess I am really unsure of what it actually entails?

For those of you that have been through this, how does our start? What actually happens at an appointment? Did you find it helpful? I'm just a little anxious I guess x

Hi - I have limited experience of this, in that we went for one appointment with Relate. It was fine, the first one is all about establishing context and what kind of counselling you'll need. More information-gathering than counselling.

That was a month ago - we're still waiting for our next appointment as they're very busy. Given that we'd agreed to pay £60 per session, I'm thinking we might just go to a private counsellor instead.

It involves an initial assessment of the issues.

You may have to individually complete forms.

A counsellor doesn't or should not judge, lay blame or take sides.

Depending on the counselling theory they use, their approach may vary. Having said that, the aim is that you solve the issues with their guidance.

Counselling provides a safe place. Very often communication is a key issue in these situations and the counsellor will try and get each of you to express how you feel. Not in a blaming manner, even if their actions are an issue for you...you take ownership of the impact on you.

Good luck. I hope it goes well.
