DS Godparents have split up...

I heard today that my closest friends, and DS godparents are splitting up.

It sounds mutual, but so, so sad. They have been together for 10 years, always so affectionate, caring and supportive of each other. I knew they had the occasional bicker but never thought this would happen.

I feel so sad. They haven't announced it publicly yet, I am the first to know. I have to tell DS - he absolutely idolises them.

Whilst I totally understand that they can't stay together and need to make the break and be happy, it is the end of an era....I know that we will see one half more than the other.

Is it selfish to mourn it a bit in private for a bit? I was really surprised by my reaction, I just burst into tears over the phone. Luckily friend took it well... Blush

I'd use it as a great opportunity to teach your child about different family arrangements, and how none are better than the others, just that they are different.

I'd also be reassuring them that you and DH aren't going anywhere. Kids get worried about their own family when this stuff happens.

A similar thing happened to me a few years ago. It's tough. But your friendship with both can survive if it's what you all want.

To be honest, your DS will only care if it impacts on his life. If he can see them both, he'll be fine.

We are now at the stage where we see each half of the former couple fairly regularly. We've even been known to do the handover with the children. It helps that the two of them are amicable. We also set out a few ground rules. We won't pass on information or answer questions about the other half of the former couple. And we won't lie.

Once your initial reaction has settled, you'll be fine.
