Pushchairs

Buggy/pushchair for farm life

Hello all,

Farmer husband and I are very confused by buggies/pushchairs.

We would like:

  1. a car seat with a swivelly base as we think it will be much easier to get our forthcoming baby in and out of the back of the truck if we can pop it in from the side and then turn it round

  1. some sort of very all-terrain buggy/pushchair so that Future Baby can join Farmer Husband on the yard and have a kip while he does farming things with the sheep (I appreciate I may be being optimistic here about the sleeping)

I had thought that we could buy some sort of travel system thing but it would appear that the swivelly car seats are not compatible with buggies. Also, it seems that as you can't leave your newborn in a car seat for very long the whole idea of having a seat you can use in the car and out of the car is flawed because it's not actually safe to have them sleeping in it for hours whilst being moved between cars and elsewhere.

So...

Is it worth having a travel system anyway so you can start with a lie-flat thing for the baby and graduate to a sitty-uppy thing when the baby is older?

Is it a total pain having a car seat that stays in the car?

Can anyone recommend an all-terrain buggy that can cope with a farmyard and muddy fields?

Thank you in advance!!

Mountain buggy would be a suggestion from me, most of my farming/equestrian friends have this- can't remember off the top of head the name of swivelly car seat but I'll ask my sister who has it- think it's the Joie 360?

We never took our car seat in/out and just transferred to and from buggy.

I recommend the Out And About Nipper 360 every single time I see a thread like this. It’s truly indestructible. Ours has been an absolute dream in the mud.

Farmer dh keeps a car seat (non-swivelling) in his truck and I have one in my car too. It’s genuinely not impeded our lives at all.

Thanks Titiana! I know MaxiCosi do a swivelly seat but I will have a look at Joie 360 as well. Good to know that fixed car seats work well too.

oh and it looks like you can get a carry cot that attaches to mountain buggy too!

Whifflesqueak - great, I was just looking at the Out and About website and admiring a Nipper so I will carry on reading about them. Is it hassle getting junior in and out of the truck? We may have become unduly fixated on swivelling seats....

Are you quite short? I have memories of teetering on a muddy running board with an infant in my arms. But lots of my memories from those early days are of stress and inconvenience Grin

I never had a swiveller but I think they’re a great idea.

Echoing the nipper recommendation. My parents live on a croft and we're always up the fields with it when we visit. The front wheel lock is brilliant for rough ground and the whole lot can be hosed off. I recommend a carrier too for the really claggy bits, or for when you need both hands free.

If I were buying again I'd get a joie 360- our car seat is so cumbersome that I ended up waking the bairn by bashing him into fence posts and doorways. Much easier to decant him into the carrier where he usually dropped off again.

I definitely recommend the Jane Matrix Crosswalk. Its amazing over the fields etc here, the suspension and wheels deal with everything really well and my dd looks very comfy in it. It has the swivelly base thing you mention and also a car seat which can be the carrycot but can also convert to lie flat which is safer for newborns breathing when driving more than 30 mins. I've never seen anyone else with one but I think it's brilliant.

Mountain Buggy Terrain, we have it, handles anything!

another vote for the Out and About Nipper 360. Ours has done lots of festivals including some real stinkers of muddy ones (yes a couple of Glastonbury's) and is still going strong. Given that an average Glastonbury has seen us walk 10 miles + a day for 7 days it really has taken some hammering.
It's 6 years old now, will have one last outing this year (our son is too big for it at 6 but had recent foot surgery so will not be up the walking) and then will likely be passed on to festival friends who have just had a baby.

I wanted a swivel car seat for newborn but husband pointed out none would then attach to the pushchair, so we got the Mountain Buggy car seat, now have a Recaro one which is swivel and apparently can be used newborn-4yrs

Thank you everybody, I don't know why I didn't just come here instead of trying to puzzle through brand websites.... Sounds like we have a number of good options and that a swivelly car seat is a good idea (Whifflesqueak - I am tall but clumsy so would end up bashing the baby about the head like Mamaidh!)

I don't think I ever took the car seat out of the car once it was in - last thing I wanted to do was carry that bloody thing around vs just the baby (in a home made mei-tai because I'm stingy and have early walkers)..

We had a mountain buggy for at PILs - thing was darn near indestructible, and lay virtually flat (although ideally needed an insert for babies), and MIL found it easy to manoeuvre and push wherever she felt like pushing it across mud/fields/whatever

We have a cybex sirona that swivels and we also have the Joie 360. They are both good but I would pick the sirona over the joie for ease of use.

I take my mamas and papas sport up to stables and it's been all over the farm. I love it and it can get through most mud challenges

Have you looked at the new cloud z car seat as it's lie-flat and you can also get an isofix base that swivels...
I have a Bumbleride Indie and my friend uses this lie-flat car seat with her Bumbleride and it fits on well. It's great on any terrain and the thing I love the most is that it's hood extends down really far to make it nice and dark for LO which is great for naps on the go!
