i've just had work done on my house, Guy who did it talked a good job and was generally very likeable. He finished the work today and whilst the main job we asked him to do is fine, the extra stuff he did and we are being charged for is just plain shit, no other way to put it. The workmanship is just poor quality and i have had second opinion from neighbour so mot being overly fussy. I'm dissapointed but also annoyed because i know i won't ever find it in myself to tell him what i think and will just pay and be pissed about it!!!

Point out the problems calmly to him, explain what you want to be done to put it right and tell him you will pay when it is done.

No need to get into an argument, any reasonable tradesman would expect you to do this.

We finished a major building project last year so I spent a lot of time inspecting work and making lists of snagging items (ie things to be finished off/ put right). Builder never had any problem with this and just put the things right. They expect you to do this.

Just be brave and polite!

NO, don't pay! Be nice, write it all down in a list - make him tea and just tell him what you don't like.

Sounds as though he may have rushed it and from what you say he sounds a nice guy who is capable of doing good work. Like YorkshireRose says....make a 'snag list'...there should always be one at the end of a job anyway.

Go on - do it - I dare you! My DP wouldn't be put out if a client did it to him. Then again he wouldn't do rubbish work....

People try it on. Don't pay till it's fixed. Whenever I didn't like a finish, I pointed it out to builder and they fixed it. Even had a dodgy double-glazing job on my first home and complained it was badly fitted. They sent somebody out (was major company).
