Talk to me about the pros and cons of having the master bedroom in the loft....

beansprout we didn't lose much storage space. We have what the builder described as the "void" accessed by a cupboard door in our bedroom. It is kind of the length of the room, but very low ceilinged. Far more accessible and handy than the old loft area was.

Ensuite is a fantastic invention.

Yes we are sleeping one floor up from the children, but we do have a baby monitor. Also I think the distance is no more of a problem than, say, if you lived in a large house and the children slept at the far end of the landing.

Another pro - visiting children tend not to realise that there is another room up there.

Another pro (for us) - our loft was a "brand new" room so we have always managed to keep it quite clutter free.

we have our bedroom up in the loft, so

pros: away from small children in a good way (can't come in to us in the mornings at some obscene time - can't get up the stairs...)

gets us our 5th bedroom which we sorely needed

is a huuuuge room, so can get loads in and still feel spacious

cons: losing storage space is a blow. we have no understairs cupboard either, and only one wardrobe in the whole house. we are seriously under-storaged, and the house is a tip.

it was quite a killer when dd2 was small, getting up and down to the loo (have no bathroom upstairs - if we were doing a loft conv, would defo put one in), and also middle of the night feeds etc, as dd2 was in own room

if my girls weren't good sleepers I'd have given up on the loft by now (see above) - by the time you've had to go downstairs to see to them, settled and gone back upstairs again you're def awake - easier to scoot in form the next room quickly.

it gets very hot in the summer. we had to get an aircon unit when I was pregnant with dd2, as was so hot. we have velux windows, and have blackout blinds on them which does help, but is very hot nonetheless.

oh, and don't believe it about children not hearing - is just as easy as if you are in the next room...

It does get hot (ours is the spare room not the master, but we are sleeping up there ATM). Also: bloomin' enormous spiders all originate up here - they don't know it is not a loft any more.

If you have the loft converted in line with building regs you will have a very reliable smoke alarm system (electric with battery back up) and all doors apart from bathrooms will be "fire doors". Windows should also be more accessible in a fire in terms of escaping.

Im wanting to do my loft for us to go in when we have another baby but wasn't sure about leaving baby n toddler below.
And also the cost of getting it done.

This is in a house we are looking at. There is a study up there too, so could just live up there really!

Hi there Beansprout. We slept in an attic room when ds was a toddler. I just got v adept at going downstairs (almost in my sleep) to check on him. It really wasn't v different from going along the corridor. I used the baby monitor for a few years though, just for peace of mind.

V hot though.

I suppose another con is that if you don't get an ensuite bathroom (and it becomes v expensive to get plumbing sorted out to accommodate the loft) the house can be very top heavy and not have enough living space vs bedrooms ..

Another con is that, although a cheaper option than moving, the costs of conversion is usually just covered by the increase in the house cost - it isn't a big 'earner' , but you get more room...

Our room is in the loft, with an L shaped Dorma and a little bathroom down a couple of steps.

Its my little haven, warm in the winter, cool in the summer (if I keep blinds shut.

We had a 'dome' put in at the top of the stairwell to let in light and that can be opened which is a godsend on a hot day..

Remind me what they feel like again?
