It feels crazy that nearly £900k isn’t enough to buy a nice house with a garden in a safe area of London!

A complaint post really.

I know, first world problems. But we have almost £900k to spend and it won’t get us a house with a garden in any London neighbourhood we like (Blackheath, Hackney, Muswell Hill, Crouch End, East Dulwich). So we thought we’d look at Bath, Bristol, Hove, etc and it doesn’t even stretch very far there. Tiny terraces with tiny gardens - if that.

Why is property so expensive?!?! How can so many people afford excess £1m to spend on houses?

My sister lives in a house in East Dulwich. She owned a series of flats first. She and her DH have well paying jobs.

City prices are crazy. Around here 900k buy you a lot of house.

Try Wanstead?

Walthamstow or Leytonstone?

If you want a lot of house and garden, then busy urban centres with flats and terraced houses are not the best place to look.

More vibe = less house

No city is entirely safe. And Blackheath certainly isn't.

I live in Sale, looking to move but also including Altrincham and having similar problems. Seems like going further in to Cheshire to the typically ‘posher’ parts (Knutsford, Wilmslow, Alderley Edge) actually gets you far more for your money than round here. I guess people just want to be close to a city.

Mind you, I’ve just looked on RightMove and there are at least 3 houses on my sister’s street either sold or for sale at under £900k.

If you’re considering East Dulwich, you could go just a bit further out to Forest Hill where you could get this: www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/110302154#/

£900k only a tiny terrace in Bristol?! Only if you were trying to buy in Clifton.

What constitutes a "safe" area, such that only £900k will do the job?

Rightmove, Detached, Clifton +5 miles, you're welcome.

Have you looked at anywhere in Bromley Borough? Somewhere like Petts Wood or Locksbottom you could probably get a semi and they're nice safe areas.

You’re clearly not looking hard enough because there are plenty of houses with gardens a lot under 900k in pleasant areas of London. Give me a minute, I’ll find you some

I did centre the search Clifton and that yielded pretty much nothing! (Well lots of grand and beautiful flats.) Then looked very slightly further away and the prices went down a bit. (Trouble is, Clifton is the only part I know to look!)

It's depressing isn't it? We want to buy in ED too and move from a flat to a house. But the size of the house you can buy for £875k just isn't all that much more floor space than a decent sized flat.

Safe probably isn’t the right word for London Grin

But places I felt safe, anyway!

Redland, Cotham, Horfield, Montpelier, St Andrew's. Lots of very nice parts of Bristol

Redland in Bristol is nice. It’s been one of the good areas of Bristol for at least 20 years (as far back as my knowledge goes).

Look at Chislehurst, Bromley, Petts Wood, Lee, Hither Green...all nice places imo where you'll get a house for that budget.

Further out will get you what you want. For instance Raynes Park, maybe Earlsfield. Definitely Beckenham.

If you're looking at Bristol, try Southville, Bedminster, Bishopston, Redland. All nice areas and your money will go much further.

Because people continue to buy them at that price. It's ridiculous. 900k would get you a mansion near us. I have zero idea how anyone could afford one without being given a huge sum of money.
