Using storage to ease the stress of moving

We have a lot of stuff, and we have a big van. We are thinking of doing all of our removals ourselves, with some help from mates. In order to reduce the stress on the day we were thinking of putting some of our stuff into storage so we can move it in slowly.
Is this a ridiculous plan?

Are you currently renting? If you’re selling, then you need to be out with your possession on completion and you won’t be able to take stuff to the next property until you’ve completed on that.

Using storage might be helpful but it also costs a pretty penny so it might make more sense just to get a removals firm to sort every out.

I put my stuff in storage before I go on the market - really just to sort it all out and declutter.
But are you self moving to save money or thinking of doing it in two steps so you can sort yourself calmly in your new home? The latter makes sense, though a serious sort through beforehand might help too.

What @JoJoSM2 says - storage is really expensive and then there is the hassle of moving it twice - once into the unit and then into the house. You would probably be just as well off hiring professional movers.

Moving yourself riding mates who have no idea what they are doing and no vested interest in your furniture is way more stressful than using a professional company, but either way storage is a good idea and cheap enough as long as your organised and don’t keep it too long otherwise the costs can mount, also people put things in storage and then realise they don’t actually need them.

We moved ourselves on the day and it was without doubt the most stressful day of my life.

I'd definitely recommend moving stuff into storage first if you can find a good price and just take the essentials on the day.

We moved ourselves into our current house using a rented van and the help of some friends. It was fine tbh.
We have more stuff now because we have kids. I think that storage costs around here are pretty reasonable. Maybe I’ll find some quotes and see if it’s cheaper than a removal company. Thanks for the help and advice. Smile
