Prepping for moving- what can I do now as feel in limbo?

We've bought another home, but due to covid, the mortgage provider wont value our home, or even state when they will do home inspections again! We don't want to jinx it (not that I'm superstitious by any means) but feel like we are in limbo. I'd like to start joining clubs in the area, but can't use the new address yet.

I've started sorting clothes, putting things in boxes etc but feel like I should be doing much more to make the move smoother. What else can I be doing whilst we wait for the mortgage to come through?

Not the answer but why can’t you move/use the address if you’ve bought the house? Or have you not bought it just had an offer accepted?

If it’s the latter the there’s a lot of us in the same boat on the buyers & sellers thread. I’m mostly waiting for solicitors & mortgage brokers, but also doing a lot of thinking/dreaming/planning, mostly about the garden and perhaps I bought a garden bench I’ve had to stash at work until the house is mine

@Lemonylemony- We've had the offer accepted (3 weeks ago) and waiting for the mortgage to come through. Maybe I'm using the wrong wording? We don't have the keys yet so officially not ours to move into or use as our address.

We are chain free and just thought things would be quicker. The hold up is the mortgage company want to view our property to value it, but due to covid, as saying they wont inspect currently. BUT, they arent giving a date of when they will resume! Its just frustrating.

I didnt know there was a buyers/sellers forum on here, so shall have a look on there. thanks.

We have been in this situation since mid-March. Thankfully just had the mortgage drawn down on Friday after so much back and forth so should get keys this week 🤞🏻🤞🏻

I felt in limbo too but there’s not much you can do in terms of getting organized until you have dates in mind. I just cleaned everywhere in the house (inside cupboards, fridge, etc) so all I have to do when we’re all packed is a quick wipe and done.

Best of luck, it’s tough buying a house during the pandemic but you’ll get there eventually.

Oh! Yeah you haven’t bought a house yet Grin even straightforward purchases can take months! Are you having your own survey done? How are the solicitors searches etc coming along? Our mortgage advisor advised 32 days average for the mortgage offer to come through but some people on the thread have been waiting months I think. Personally I’m not so worried about the mortgage but more concerns about the solicitor/legal side of things, my vendors have not answered their property information questionairre very clearly and given some answers that conflict other evidence.

@Lemonylemony- thanks for the link. Yes, survey done. Its a deceased estate with no chain that end, and no chain for us. Real estate said would take 'at least' until Aug at the earliest to complete. I guess I wrongly assumed as we are all chain free and had mortgage lined up, it would be more straight forward and quicker.

Sort out all those random drawers/cupboards of random stuff, the ones that usually get stuffed into a carrier bag or box moved to the next house and left for years not that I've done this numerous times

You can't pack too much too soon.
Every single item in your house has to be picked up and packed at some point. Shed, garage and garden.
Have you ordered a moving pack online? Boxes, tape, pens, labels.
This is a great chance to have a clear out. Go through your winter clothes. 25 mugs in the kitchen? Mismatched plates? Odd glasses? 14 duvet covers and no matching pillow cases? Sort the lot.
Dvd's. If you have watched it on tv, charity bag it.
Curtains? Take up massive amounts of room. Will you take them? Get them washed.
Kitchen appliances. That rice cooker/multi steamer/grouse plucking machine, gift them away.
Paper work back log. Sort it. Recycle it.
Good luck in your new home! x

@willowmelangell- Great ideas, thanks. Grouse plucking machine? hehehehe. As odd as it sounds, I actually looked up something similar recently for chickens and might, possibly use such a thing! Grin
