Where should DSis live?

DSis is relocating back to UK next year after 6 years in New Zealand and a few more before that in various European countries.

She and her DH can't decide where to live.

Requirements:
They are very 'outdoorsy' and like lakes and/or mountains
He's a builder and she work an in the luxury travel industry. Hers is therefore probably the lead career as he can Work almost anywhere.
They'd like somewhere 'naice' burn are very liberal, a bit lefty, so nowhere too conservative (big or small C)
They may or may not have DC, decision not made.

Happy to travel to family/ies elsewhere in UK even if that take some several hours or internal flight so don't have north/South preference.

They'd have about £600k to buy a house, but would rent for first year or so.

don't know what happened there. Scotland has great scenery, lots of luxury hotels (Gleneagles for instance), good transport and airports.

Cheshire? Close to North Wales for lakes/mountains, plenty of luxury travel customers, grammar schools in Manchester.

Depends on what she actually does, if it's hotel based their luxury boutique places are all over but availability of work isn't guaranteed, the only place in Britain with lots of luxury hotels is London. If she's a travel agent then I have no idea where luxury agents are based, with the internet they could be anywhere

The South could also work. We're in outer London (Sutton). 600k gets you a nice 3-4-bed house around here. Obviously tons of work in the building trade and hotels. Probably not particularly lefty but it's been a Lib Dem area for decades.

For outdoor pursuits we are a 20 min drive from the Surrey Hills (lots of mountain biking, hiking etc) and a 1h drive to the beach (sailing, sea kayaking, SUPing etc).

North west - Lancaster is quite lefty/hippy, close to Lake District.

Chester - very naice, beautiful Cheshire countryside

North West an interesting idea. Can deffo see them in the Lakes (not least because we grew up there!)
Haven't been to Lancaster in 20 years... worth a day trip to check it out maybe!
Chester and Cheshire interesting but poss a bit 'posh restaurants and naice lifestyle' for them. Maybe I'm misjudging? Would be delighted to be advised that I am and would love to hear more arguments for there.
