Removal costs..

I’ve just had a removal quote for a 3 bed small semi (80 square metres). We do have a piano and quite a bit of stuff but not a hoarders paradise - plenty of carpet to be seen - quote was £3500 and he reckoned it would be a two vehicle, three-four day job. We’re moving half a mile. This included packing (£800) and obviously I’ll be getting more quotes but please tell me this is the highest one I’ll get as this was much more than I expected.,.? I’m in southern Hampshire.

Seems way expensive to me. I moved to Hampshire from London a month ago and paid circa 2,700 that included all the insurances for contents and late entry and cancellation. This included packing and I had a lot of pictures, mirrors and stuff plus loads of garden pots. This also included trans shipping into smaller vans at the other end due to narrow lane. Was done across 2 days. I used Britannia Sanderstead a National firm but with hub in Petersfield and I knew they were pricey but worth it and obviously there was the distance.

Extortionate!!! My father moved from London to Manchester around 3 years ago and it cost him £700. It was a lorry filled with furniture and all of his belongings from a 3 bed terrace.

That seems a lot. Highest we had was just over 2k from pickfords, locals were better.

In Hampshire try movehire (we used them, they are brilliant), or bishops waltham removals. Both quoted around £1400 fully packed 3 bed (with attic, shed & basement!). Movehire included reassembling flat pack stuff at the other end too.

Large 4 bed, moved 200 miles, including packing. 3 day job = £2.6k. This was earlier this year.

Definitely look around

£3,500!! Shock

I've recently had a couple of quotes that came in at around £1,100 - £1,400 for a 4 bed house, but only two people's 'stuff'. No piano, but we do have bikes etc.

I'm up north, but not sure if that makes a difference.

That's extortionate. I've always found a very wide variation with removal costs.

We paid that including a piano from a much bigger house four years ago. We have thousands of books. It was a full day of packing and loading lorry 1; 1/2 day to get out the furniture into van 2, unloaded at other end in 2.5 hours because we didn't get in until nearly 5pm - as soon as the money came through. We unpacked ourselves and fortunately I'd negotiated a waiver on the delay fees. However, DH gave the men a £350 tip because they were entitled to leave at 3pm when it was clear they couldn't finish by 5pm. It may have been rather stressful but was v pleased I had booked a hotel for that night.

Our vendors did not get the money until the folliwing morning. So word of advice - do not complete on a Friday - you need a working day after completion to sort out any issues.

Thank you for the reassurance! Have four other people coming to quote next week. My parents moved house several times - I’m sure they have more stuff than us - and even 4/5 bedroom houses across the country haven’t attracted this sort of fuss and money!

We’ve just had a quote recently from fully insured local company I’ve used before- 2 men very professional. £400 3 bed terrace 1 reception room loft and shed. Packing is £300 extra. We are only moving 100 meters but distance won’t make too much difference if staying local- it’s the lifting/ packing which is the bulk of the work. Last time these guys were super fast, they got us moved in 3 hours and we have a LOT of stuff (no piano though). They own the company so I’m sure that makes the difference

Proper truck+smaller van and free boxes delivered. But no bells and whistles ie they quote via email - no office.

Your quote is outrageous. You’re paying for ads/ branding/ admin staff/ but mainly owner profit margin.

Go local and save. I don’t mean a man with a van, but a small family owned company that doesn’t pay to come high up on google

Btw we live in one of the highest house price area of the country.

Oh and we gave them a massive tip last time- will do again

And we’ve recommended them to many people

This is a local company, one of the reasons I was shocked. Based in a Hampshire village...

Wow. That is surprising! Get on Facebook or WhatsApp and ask people you know for recommendations- unless you’ve already done that

We are in Cambridgeshire and moved (3 minutes drive away) in July. It was £1500 for a 4 bed with garage contents and included the packing service. They were awesome and efficient. There were about 5 lads that came to pack. It took an afternoon to pack. A morning to fill the vans. They unloaded in the afternoon and were gone by 3pm. I can't believe your quote!

I think when you get a quote like that, which is so far off the mark, you can assume they don’t want/ need the business. A couple of those jobs a month and you won’t need to work for the rest of the month!

In case anyone else is interested, I’m half way through getting quotes now and have been quoted £2000 and £1500, which are much more palatable numbers...
