Cost of Architect?

Hello Mumsnetters,

This is my very first post, and a REALLY boring one I'm afraid - but we are purchasing a property in SE UK and it's a 'project' one. There's a number of things we want to do to it pretty immediately, but we have an end game extension plan in mind. My question is - how expensive are architects? As I literally have zero idea! We'd like to find out if what we want to do is even feasible, as then we'd hold off doing certain other things if so, but I'm not really sure where to start! Also we are both very much office-job types with minimal DIY experience, apart from some painting and wallpaper stripping here and there... so any other tips would be super useful! Very excited about this one, as planning for it to be our 'forever' house, but it will take a while to get there...!!

Hiya,

Depends on what you want them to do but it starts at 2-3% of the build costs (just drawings) to up to 10-15% if they manage it all for you.

Buy Housebuilder's Bible 12 - it is peerless and fiull of amazing advice.

Read these

  1. Its for commercial projects but gives you a ballpark for 'full' service costs
    www.architectsjournal.co.uk/news/aj-fees-survey-2017-how-much-are-you-charging/10020125.article

  2. Emma has a good page for what a domestic architect can do for you and rough costs
    www.emma-adams.co.uk/employing-an-architect

Honestly architects are great to work with but they have six years at university as well as ten years of being underpaid at the practise they learnt at - architecture is the only Dickensian industry I know :)

If it around this year try the architect in the house scheme.

PM me if you have queries - I am more public and commercial buildings but know the industry well.

That is SO useful, thank you Ewar (PS love the username, that joke has always made me laugh!)

Will have a browse through the links you've sent, and let you know if I have any queries! Are you an architect yourself? Sounds like no, but have clearly worked in the industry...?
