Devizes?

Does anyone live there and have an opinion? What's good or bad about it? Have visited a few times recently; liked it, it's pretty and in a decent location as far as I can see. We know people fairly close, and are considering retirement options but in a couple of years really, during which much could change. Any areas to be avoided?

We live in a village not far from Devizes. It's a nice town. There is a weekly market and some nice little independent shops as well as the usual suspects (and lots of charity shops, but that's better than empty shops, in my opinion). It's not particularly up-market place but not at all rough either. There is a good mix of people and lots going on in terms of clubs and activities.
I would say the main down-side is the traffic, which can be horrendous and is only likely to get worse as more new homes are planned. I guess that is less of an issue though if you are planning on living in town itself and also if you will be retired then you can choose not to travel at the busiest times.

Thank you, sprig. Haven't seen the traffic as we have been at off peak times, but as you say, if we're retired we have some flexibility.

Some of the nearby villages are lovely, good pubs too. Devizes traffic is a bit hellish but the town centre is OK for a Potter about and they have good range of restaurants. Lovely walking area too with the canals, ridge way and Salisbury plain nearby

Those were among the attractions, Flown.

Love Devizes. Best market I've been to in a long time. Some lovely delis and Indy coffee shops. M and s food. Charity shops all v upmarket actually. I visit my retired parents there and they love it. They've lived there a few years and have made loads of friends.
