Bathroom furniture...naff or not?

Just that really...dh hates it, says it looks cheap and nasty

I really like it and think it looks more stylish and expensive...

By bathroom furniture I mean hidden cisterns and sinks with cupboards/draws etc.

Any thoughts?

As someone who sells bathrooms for a living they are without a doubt the most popular option!

They're really well manufactured these days and you get so much more choice on style (traditional vs super modern)

That's reassuring, I do find dh attitude bizarre give he used work for a fitted kitchen company!

I think I could compromise on the cistern but not the sink unit but then I think it would just look so much better.

gandt is it a terrible idea to go modern in an old property? Or do people want modern bathrooms generally? We won't be removing any original features but planning to have a fairly sleek modern shower room.

This is true and this is deffo a first world problem...for me it is about ease of cleaning (usually me). I just think it is cleaner.

Well some are nice and some are nasty...

I prefer a traditional look, so like cistern toilets, pedestal basins. But for practicality would put a basin in a built in vanity unit - it's the easiest way to build in some storage in a normal sized bathroom. Wouldn't build the toilet in myself for first preference, but it can look nice.

Generally really don't like the kind of basins that are a bowl on top of a unit. I think they are already dated. But it's just personal taste when it comes down to it.

That looks lovely Tattie, I think we will need to go to some shops and look. I haven't explored with dh where he thinks we will store things. Our current bathroom has three window with deep sills with everything on show and I hate it. Cluttered, dust catching and yuck!

I hate the shiny white bathroom stuff, it looks 80s mfi, but it is hard keeping my open shelves nice

We have just installed fitted furniture in the children's bathroom.

No more dropping a toothpaste cap that somehow always ends up rolling under the soil pipe, no more dusting the top of the bloody soil pipe, no more reaching behind the pedestal basin to clean the bit between the wall and the pipes feeding the sink. Sheer bliss.

We haven't tiled it in so all pipework is still accessible for any future issues. It makes the bathroom look bigger and we now have storage (tiny bathroom with nowhere else to put any storage.)

I agree some things can look cheap but it does depend how much you want to spend.

In terms of looks, I am definitely with your dh.

But that doesn't mean the modern built-in look offends me. It depends on how it's done. In my last flat everything was tiled away and it drove me mad - particularly the toilet, but that was because they hadn't created an entry point so when the toilet broke we had to smash all the tiles... But I moved to a more old-fashioned bathroom, and now the toilet drives me mad because it's so hard to keep clean and non-spidery behind the U bend or S bend or whatever it's called. When I replace it (quite shortly) I'll probably go for a close-coupled (is that the word?) model. I'd also go for kitchen sink storage if space was tight.

I don't think we are on the same budget User looks so sleek and clean, feeling very jealous.

The kind I have been looking at is with the cistern surrounded by a cabinet (hopefully making relatively simple to gain access) rather than those hidden in the wall. Our house was built in 1800 and I am not convinced that given the tight dimensions it would even be possible.

I'm thinking of having a hidden cistern toilet and then a wall hung vanity unit, plus a freestanding full height cupboard for towels. The full fitted bathroom did appeal as I need the storage, but I do agree that it looks a bit naff... Think it might date badly too

I haven't used sinks with vanity units so I have a question about them. Doesn't water go over the edge of the sink and into the drawers eventually rotting them?

Compromising with dh and going for a short projection flat back to the wall toilet, our bathroom is small, narrow with a sloping ceiling and one wall that narrows at one end . But still thinking vanity unit sink, but going to look at ikea :) will need a short projection one of these too, maybe more cloakroom sized...

I think the thing about dating is that to me the traditional basin on a pedestal look really old fashioned and dated so guess it really is just preference. I also really dislike toilets with dust/grime catching areas like the traditional ones with the waste pipe exposed.

We are getting bathrooms done at the moment. 3 of them! In our current house there isn't any bathroom furniture but there are floor to ceiling built in shelves at the end of the bath and I love, love, love having the storage so yes, we are getting furniture. You can get some lovely stuff though that fits in well with traditional styles so out main bathroom is going to be very traditional complete with high flush toilet with a proper chain but the basin will have storage. The en suite and downstairs shower rooms we are less fussed about looks wise. I'm not keen on hidden cisterns for the loos so they are going to be normal toilets but again the basins will be within storage units. I quite like them, especially ones that are fully moulded with the basin because it means no sealant to go manky. Our en suite will have cupboard under sink plus then coming out like a kitchen work top with another cupboard under so there will be lots of space to put things and a surface for hair brush and face cream and all that gubbins. Getting a matching mirrored unit too which we were not sure about but I wanted somewhere high up for medicines.

Glad I am not alone IAm . We will be going more traditional, cottage was built in 1800 so will keep with cottage feel really want modern but it won't look right....
