Painting MDF - Anyone done it?

Our bedroom has horrible built in wardrobes (cream MDF with a grey grain running through them, hmmm). However, the doors are flat (no beading, no twirly embellishments) so I want to paint them and change the cream plastic handles, then they'll do me until I win the lottery!

Please can anyone who has painted over similar advise me on how to do it?

I've checked out the internet but am a bit confused because a lot of instructions are for painting bare MDF board which hasn't already been covered.

I would really appreciate any advice and tips.

Thank you!

what is the surface like? chalk paint is very impressive in that it covers surfaces with very little effort. the only down side is that finish will be quite rustic. I have used it on MDF very sucessfully. however, it does mark quite easily and is quite soft. I'm not sure how hard wearing it would be.

your other option would be to sand the surface with some sandpaper - called "keying in" and then using a good primer. You can then put whatever paint you want over the top. we did that on some chairs and it worked well.

It sounds like it's laminated Mdf so you don't need Mdf suitable paint. You need paint that suits the laminated material. Maybe cupboard paint like for kitchens? It's hard to advise without seeing it!
