Yet another bath question - restoring/painting/new legs (not mine)

House we've bought and are currently renovating came with a cast-iron freestanding bath. My first instinct was to get rid, but thinking about it more I'm inclined to keep it - it's a decent piece of ironmongery, probably salvaged from somewhere, and although it's a bit hideous now (painted a nasty shiny dark green), I think it could be lovely with a bit of TLC.

Has anyone had a cast-iron bath repainted? And my DP has now got a bit of a bee in his bonnet about changing its legs from the lion's-foot style it currently has to something a bit more minimalist - possible art-deco-style. I have no idea how the legs are attached or whether they could be changed.

Any advice/experience?
