How to prepare for building work/extension

Hi

We have an extension and renovation work starting in the summer, and I kind of think we should be doing more prep and planning than we currently are! We have done a basic spec list but should probably put some more thought into it.

Any tips or suggestions on what we can do now to make life easier when it starts? We won't be able to afford a new kitchen or much in the way of flooring for a while so we can't shop yet.
