First time buyers - where in London?

elmirador104 · 27/11/2015 12:33

Hopefully one of the knowledgeable people on here can help me here.

I think someone has mentioned a website where you can put in maybe tube stations or work area and it will give locations in London to look at?

One of us will be working in Central London, the other is a bit more south. Tube stations near work would be Southwark, Euston and Warren St. So we are looking for affordable housing within an hour commute - possible?

Depends what your budget is! How much do you have to play with?

The budget is £350K tops

Thameslink might be worth checking out - would take you direct to Blackfriars (which has an exit South of the river) and also St Pancras, which should be walkable too.

What sort of place are you looking for - how many bedrooms?

Thanks everyone, especially CheeseBadger as that was the site I was thinking of.

Hopefully 2 bed place, don't know how realistic that is

It's definitely possible.

If you'd consider ex-council, then you could afford the border of Zone 1 south of the river:
Kennington

Or if you're looking for a period place and don't mind rail or overground rather than underground, you could look at Crystal Palace/West Norwood/Sydenham.
Sydenham, says offers in excess but been on since 2nd Nov

Watford is Hertfordshire but you'd be at Euston in 25 minutes

How many bedrooms?

With those two locations, I would look for trains coming into Waterloo so you can go north to Euston Sq on the Northern line.

I'd also look at high speed train lines. You could cover a far greater distance leaving London properly than travelling in on a train that stops every 2 miles

Whatever you do,don't buy this!! www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-50141516.html?premiumA=true

It appears to be a bed in a conservatory on top of an 'unofficial illegal roof terrace'. I know London property is mad, but Jeez!

Agree with pp, you can get something fairly central (zone 2) if you're prepared to consider ex-council.
e.g. Oval

another near Kennington

Lewisham is worth looking at - especially around the edges close to Hither Green, Ladywell etc...house prices are going up quickly and lots of regeneration work going on so should be a good investment.

Thank you, I will take a look at those areas.

Petts Wood is a lovely place to live. It is not on the tube but has excellent rail connections to Victoria, Charing Cross, London Bridge, Kings Cross, Cannon St etc.

Two bed flat under £300k with private garden: www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-55912922.html

Or 2 bed house in nearby Orpington:

Babys that pad off the Walworth Road takes the biscuit! Love the bedroom! Would be very surprised if it has planning permission.

We have just bought a 2 bed in Hither Green for 340k. Very lovely round there (depending on what you are looking for) and good transport links.

That Walworth Road place has been on and off the market a few times, think it's struggling to sell (no doubt because of that ludicrous and almost certainly not-permitted conservatory)

OP - we are very similar to you except one of us is Clapham Junction for work and the other central, also looking to buy for the first time, 2 beds if possible. Our budget tops out at 300k so sadly a little less, but if I were you I'd be tempted by Streatham. Hop skip and a jump to Brixton and 3 stations, one of which would run you to Blackfriars and others into Victoria (change for the Victoria line for Euston or just bus to Brixton and pick it up from there).
