How common is it for houses to have asbestos roof tiles and what do they look like?

I don't know asbestos tiles, but synthetic slates, in asbestos cement, start out very black (they are no longer made with asbestos) and weather to dark grey. They are perfectly flat and rectangular, unlike natural slates, and exactly the same size, and have holes precisely drilled along the top edge and either centrally near the bottom, or sometimes in the middle. They are quite thin.

Where a roof has been repaired or patched, you will see that the new ones are not the same grey as the old.

They are not considered hazardous unless you decide to smash them up, but there will be facilities and instructions for safe disposal - see your council website.

they look like concrete tiles to me. AFAIK no asbestos.

Is there a maker's name moulded on them?
