High end bathrooms

Thinking of doing up the bathroom. I'm hearing people saying they are spending £2k whilst others are spending about £15k. What's the difference between a basic bathroom and a high end one? Just the brand of the suite and tiles? What would you expect in a really cool bathroom? In a kitchen i can see that the difference would be in all the toys and high end appliances, but struggling to see where the money would get spent in a bathroom so wondering if i'm overlooking anything? Thanks.

I don't know really. Fancy taps and gadgety electric showers with mood lighting in? Speakers in the ceiling? Really expensive tiling like natural stone or marble etc.

Actually I think you could have all of that for15k plus a tv that projects into a wall so you can watch in the bath.

Tiles are a big cost especially in a larger room, e.g. using natural stone or Porcelain at £60 per sqm

It depends largely on whether you are replacing like for like or if you are reconfiguring the room. If the latter it far more expensive. Tile is the killer. You can get it for £50 sq meter or if you like tile porn you can head over to ann sacks and those start at 250 and go up to the thousands. The all glass shower surrounds of custom can be another high priced item and can cost in the thousands. Or if you go for a fancy free standing bath.

Taps are a biggie, the range in price is huge. Sanitaryware too I suppose but not to quite the same degree I don't think.

I think if you stay out of super cheapo then price is more about design than quality. Which is fine, there are some beautiful things out there, but I don't think eg a £1000 tap is automatically 'better' than a £200 one.

Also labour can really vary. If your bathroom is big and you're paying labour for tiling and plumbing that can add a lot even if you're not going particularly high end. And yes tiles can get very expensive.

Thanks. Since i had a pretty good experience with tonsoftiles recently it looks like i might end up coming out of it pretty well then! I'll be able to splash out on fancy taps!

I think it's diminishing returns - if you compare a Duravit bath with a bath from a DIY shed, the Duravit bath will be thicker, better finish etc (well, that was our experience anyway) but that's a difference of a few hundred pounds. Not sure how much more bath you get if you pay 1K+ for one.

Ohhh, my parents have an extraordinary bathroom with a huge freestanding bath on a heated tiled floor and the bath is a jacuzzi too and it's got books somehow round one side and you can phone the walls to put music on and the shower has all these extra jets for massage and, good grief, it all goes on in their bathroom! I have gone on holiday to their bathroom before now.

If I were to spend that much on a bathroom I think I would forgo an actual bathroom and put in an endless pool instead.
