Is there a kitchen in the house already - even if hideous could it be cleaned up/a few units added enough to get by?

If you want cheap, turn away from the Kitchen Installers and look at DIY cabinets. Apart from the worktop, which needs to be cut, the rest are just rectangular boxes that you stand on the floor or hang on the wall. If you design it so the worktop is made of simple rectangles, a DIY shed will cut it for you.

If you look on ebay, then one day you will find a second-hand one you like that is also close enough.

We have had a temporary kitchen for 2 years. We have an Ikea varde floor cupboard unit, a built-in larder, a dresser and a couple of tall, freestanding cupboards. The Ikea unit is the only one we bought. We don't have any worktop to speak of (apart from a small table on wheels) and it's been surprisingly fine. We're also saving for a kitchen extension like you.

If you're in Central Scotland you can have my old one! Nice-ish pine units would do you for a couple of years. I can't really be bothered listing it for sale.
