Replacement windows - any knowledge?

I'd really like to replace the 1980s (?) double glazing on my new house. It's Everest and seems to be in v g working order but is fugly (brown frames, cross bars on bay window) and I think ruins the look of the house from the front.

I only want to do the bay window and a 3-part casement in the front bedroom - as I say, it's actually pretty good stuff and keeps the house nice and warm, dry etc.

Any ideas - however rough - of the cost of this? Also, would it make a big mess inside? I have been decorating and don't want to muck it all up. Anyone had new windows recently and can advise me? Thanks.

I replaced mine a few years ago. There's is no comparison in terms of insulation between modern double glazing and eighties double glazing (which we ripped out). If you think your warm now you'll be toastie when it's done :-). Since I did mine the price of triple glazing has dropped considerably. It is becoming the norm.

The mess wasn't too bad. They replastered around the windows so I had to repaint that bit in each room. Not a prob with paint but could be a issue if you've got wallpaper. They could have done a better job covering the carpet. I felt like throwing their dust sheets in the washing machine.

I've just had my front windows replaced on the second floor.
Because the original windows weren't plastered in there was no mess. They just peeled away the sealant on the outside, used a saw to cut through the screws holding the window frames in, and pulled out the whole window, leaving the sill in place. They then put in the new frame, added the glass panels, and sealed the outside. On the inside they added a thin strip to cover up the gap between the plaster and the window. They tidied, vacuumed and cleaned every thing up. Took 5 hours to do 4 windows.
It was fascinating to watch!
Might be more of an issue replacing a bay window, but ask them how they are going to reduce the mess!
