Fitted vs. Free Standing Wardrobes

We are finally moving into our house and I always assumed we would install fitted wardrobes in the alcoves of our bedroom-- its a typical Victorian house with a chimney in the bedroom and space either side. We have a fireplace installed in the chimney breast and I am beginning to wonder of fitted wardrobes would look right. The ceilings are also extremely high (10ft / 3m).

If we went for fitted it would look something like this:

Any thoughts?

fitted look better in alcoves in my opinion. A really good carpenter will be able to make the most of the space. Unlike a free standing wardrobe they'll sink into a room rather than dominate it and look cluttered.

I love freestanding furniture but prefer a free standing chest of drawers, dressing table to a wardrobe.

We're in a Victorian property and have wardrobe in alcoves in the main bedroom that include shoe racks, drawers, two hanging rail levels

I like the fitted wardrobes you linked to, I think they look good in the alcoves.

Hi - that is almost exactly what my fitted wardrobes look like!

I used to have freestanding Ikea Pax wardrobes in my alcoves (victorian terrace house) but wanted a tidier look and also needed to redo the bedroom floor so decided to replace with fitted. I didn't have a huge budget and really wanted to keep the Pax interior fittings so the carpenter managed to pimp the wardrobe frames and incorporate them into the alcoves, so to all intents and purposes they are fitted but within the woodwork are the old Pax wardrobes with drawers, trouser rail, hanging rails jewellery racks and so on.

Definitely worth getting fitted in my opinion as they look great, but make sure you plan the storage carefully.

I want that house. I am a lover of free standing, but you have just completely sold me on fitted. Smile

Yes, this is one the houses I've saved for inspiration regarding the interior! I think I am going to go for built -in wardrobes as the storage is so much better but I think I need to show the carpenter these pics. I've seen it where it doesn't work so well so I think the devil is in the detail :)
