What flooring do you have on your stairs and landing?

We are going to replace the manky carpet on our stairs and landing but don't know what to go for.

Personally I love wood ( we have painted white floors downstairs and varnished floorboards in bedrooms upstairs ) but DH concerned about noise if we have all wood on stairs/landing too ( semi detached house with very thin walls).

Can anyone help please? My style is modern/scandinavian to give you an idea. I just don't really like carpet if I'm honest but interested to hear from others re what you've done.

Thanks

Manky Carpet here too.
I have a yen for a white painted wooden staircase with a stripy runner.
Might be hard to keep clean though.

Stripey carpet would look good.

Thanks everyone. Might go for carpeted runner which then continues along hallway at top of stairs.

runner and white sides with brass stair rods : what I had in my last house!

Stair runner same as landing carpet, inherited from previous occupant, and perfectly acceptable for now.

Carpet here as well. I like the idea of runner.
Also, darkish colour with fleck pattern so as not to show the "bits".
Don't want to have to hoover it too often!

Underlay at the moment ;) but it will be striped carpet after next Thursday. Adam kasbah in cashew. Love it and will definitely make a statement! We've got little ones so ruled out a runner and bars for safety/noise reasons (he uses the edges to climb the stairs!). They also collect dust bunnies like you wouldn't believe.

My hall and stairs have been stripped for 9 months ready to re decorate. I am the one putting off doing it as my dh and I can`t agree. He wants walls painted and stairs carpeted. I want main wall papered to give it warmth and stairs painted. We have almost 16yr old triplets and most of their friends!! They all come in and traipse upstairs with their shoes on, carpet is going to be filthy in no time. Noisy yes............forever cleaning a carpet.........NO!

Thanks misty9 and triplets. Triplets hope you can compromise somewhere along the line!

We had painted stairs until very recently. They collected dust like you wouldn't believe and needed vacuuming every day to look halfway decent and the paintwork needed wiping frequently. Have replaced with stripy carpet and love it.

And it's very good for hiding dirt!

I'm not a big fan of carpet either, but am quite liking Berber, for example www.carpetright.co.uk/range-chunky%20berber-carpets.html

Also saw some lovely stairs in a magazine once which were part papered, DH would not go for this but i think it looks great! www.yellowwooddesign.com/blog/2012/3/22/fancy-stair-treads.html

Scrubbable carpet was our choice. Morrocan Spice was the colour. Fine except where our Lab dug a hole!
