Hi there, My family and I are looking to move out of London. We have two boys, one of whom has special ed needs. We are looking at state primary schools and probably private secondary. That's the plan at the moment anyway, but this could change! We are looking for somewhere with a good sense of community. Ideally I would like to be able to walk the kids to their primary school. My husband does not have to commute daily but will do a few times a week. I don't like the idea of having to drive everywhere and would like somewhere that its easy to get to know people in the local area, I worry that if you drive everywhere you wont "bump" into people and build rapport etc. Bearing all of this in mind, does anyone live in Oxshott? And able to shed any light on what its like to live in the area? Any advice much appreciated!

Can't help you at all but isn't it somewhere Gareth Malone made a choir?

Dont live there, but its abit 'behind closed doors', go for a walk and get greeted by private roads, and country paths with no sidepath........still beautiful if you have the money, but im like you, like to walk and be outdoors and explore.....

Its a bit like a very posh private estate for me. It isn't somewhere I would first think of given your criteria. I would have thought given the house prices most people just went private.

I would look more at the Horsleys or Effingham/Bookham, or Cobham.

But I could be hideously prejudiced.

I was brought up in oxshott and my parents still live there. I went to royal Kent school. At that time (30 years ago) it was a proper community. It is not any more. The majority of normal sized family homes have been knocked down and replaced by gated mansions many of which are unoccupied for a lot of the time. If you can afford to live in oxshott you do not go to state school. Do not choose it if it is community you are after. Cobham, effingham, horsley, ashtead much better.

I have lived in Oxshott for 20 years and my youngest child is at the Royal Kent . It is a fabulous School and so so friendly. The problem with Oxshott is that it has changed over the years, Chelsea Football team moved in and prices of property went through the roof . Most people either go privately or move out to Effingham Fetcham or Horsley to get their child into the Howard of Effingham at Secondary level. There is a real sense of Community and a fabulous pre School in the church hall all my children went there and loved it. Cobham is a great place to shop and you must visit the medicine garden a wonderful addition to the area .
