Best colours for south facing living room?

Looking for ideas.

Moved into this 3 story, 5 yr old house in march. Got 2 XL charcoal fabric sofas and went for grey walls - dark grey (pewter I think) on fireplace wall and a pale grey on other 3. Got some bright ref cushions on sofa, and some red, black and silver horizontal striped voile curtains at windows and a light oak laminate floor (which I hate but house is rented).

We've tried so far 2 rugs - first a red self stripe rug from ikea. Not big enough and too much of a pink tint in it. Then a red tulip rug from next. Don't like it.

Is the colour scheme wrong? We love the grey walls, and have a purple band rug coming, which would mean changing curtains and cushions if we like it.

Any ideas?

What size of rug are you looking for and what is the budget?
I have looked at the John Lewis website and like:
Calvin Klein Home Naturals in Ashen
Aspen in Laquer
Perth Rug in Laquer
Calvin Klein Home Urban Rugs in Gulf
Shearling Lunar Sheepskin Rugs in Charcoal
this all depends on colour matching your current red and grey Colours.
It is hard to match furnishings to paint and easier to do it the other way round.
If you keep the striped curtains, I would avoid a striped rug.
other colour options with the grey would be bright green or light blue (cool)
Purple might be a bit Lenten.

Extra large, which is something like 230cms in length.

The home urban rug is gorgeous but very expensive. I'm just working down your list.

Hi Suzy
looked at B&Q and they have affordable rugs for just over £100 . I like paisley red, there is also floral red and grey floral.

I'd never have thought of B&Q. Thanks I'll have a look.
