What would you do with an August born Year 1 girl who is able but who rushes through written work

so much so that her spelling is nowhere near as good as it could be (and I know she can do it when she actually thinks about her spellings) and the work is messy and the handwriting is wonky and all over the place. But the ideas and the vocabulary is good.

Would you wait for it to sort itself out as she matures, or do work - if so what kind of work?

Sounds like you are describing my DD. Almost finished year 1, wont be 6 till 11 days before starting year 2, and her handwriting is so dreadful I cant read most of it. She forgets her finger spaces so all the words run into one, and she will start a new line in the middle of the word.
I think its just immature fine motor skills and spatial awareness.
I am just planning to wait, I assume practice and time will help.
But you could try to improve her motor skills with play dough, threading, sewing, jigsaws with small pieces etc.

Hope that helps.

What would i do? I'd smile and give her loads of praise.
My DD was 6 last week and in contrast, it sounds like your DD is doing very well. There are many handwriting work books though if you do want to help your DD improve. Also give your DD tracing paper that you've drawn lines on (or u might be able to buy some) and maybe get her to trace sentences you write.

Sounds like my DD and she has only really sorted it out in YR5/6. Her brains just works a lot faster than her pen.

Wity writing there are so many things to think about at once.Ideas vocabulary, spellings, handwriting and punctuation
There is usually a trade-off between the content and the technical stuff even with adults yet alone young childre. She is working fast not because she is trying to get her ideas down as they flow into her mind.
She is doing just fine.Praise her and don't nit-pick.
