Reception child behind?

So today I asked my child's teacher to change his reading book to a different one as he came out with the same one. she changed it but made a comment on how she struggles finding him the right one as the other children are more ahead of him.
needless to say this comment has left me feeling absolutely shit. my child is on level pink and the books have around four to five three letter words to a page. he is still at the stage of sounding letters out to make the word which I had thought was normal for his age. ( he is April born if this makes any difference)
What level books are other reception children on?

Don’t even go there! Every single child does this at their own pace and the teacher shouldn’t struggle to find him something that is right for him. If you are reading with him of a night time and so are the school that will help him practice, he’ll get there with help. Doesn’t mean you are shit at all. I’m a bit surprised by the teacher because all kids learn differently and will be at different stages. Good luck x

Pink is the expected level for a Reception child. Not behind at all. Maybe your child is just in an exceptionally able class.

I'd question the level of funding given to stocking the school reading book library if they are already struggling to find punk books for your child

I'd have thought if lots of the other children are ahead there would be more pink books available for your son to read! That said a lot of pink books are pretty dull because they're so restricted in the words they can use - songbirds are about the best out there.

The books should be matched to your son's current phonic knowledge and skills not to any particular book band (book banding is based on completely different criteria to support the old multicueing methods) .You need to look at which sounds your child is confident with and how well they can blend those sounds to read words in text.

Just buy books yourself or go to tbe library/ online resources. nothing much the teacher can do if there are
no ressources

Reception teacher here. Very normal to be on pink band books with cvc words at this point. Also very normal to be sounding words out and blending them to make the word. It doesn't sound to me like you need to be worried.

Does he recognise most of the phase 2 sounds? (S a t p i n m d g o c K ck e u r h b f l ff ll ss)
Can he blend when he sounds out? I.e. Reading cat, c-a-t cat. That would be what I would tell you to practise with him at home if he was in my class!

It depends on the scheme - phonic bug dc school made them read every single book so took till about May doing that on pink band i think because we only had 2 a week from Oct.
I would bear in mind some parents may have already done reading at home before school - some of which is non phonic so although those kids may seem ahead they may not be able to read new words.
Also our school very rarely read 1-2-1 with the kids and even more rarely with the teacher so progress would have been almost solely from practice at home (combined obviously with how quickly a dc can pick it up).

My 6 year old has just gone up to red. Hell do it at his own pace, i wont push or rush him. Hes higher than average for maths and science and teacher graded him above average for understanding of the world which im happy with and i dont worry about his reading

Pink books is very normal for this stage in reception op, no need to worry.

DD2 was on pink about this point in the year and I was desperately worried as I'd been told she wasn't expected to meet end of reception expectations - suddenly took a huge leap forward and left reception reading above expected levels in terms of book bands and has pegged at greater depth since then reading.
