MN's 'How to teach your child to read' page - awful

Recommends Sparklebox - yes, really.

And this old bollocks: "Some words, like “he”, “she” and “what”, just don't decode well with phonics. But they're so common; they just need to be learnt by ear."

And don't get me started on the 'good guess' paragraph.

Oh dear Feenie I was having such a nice break ...

"Start with the letter her name begins with, and take it from there" what if your child is called George or Charlotte or Phoebe?

"And pronounce them phonetically: “a” rather than “ay” " unless your child is called Amy.

"and “buh” rather than “bee" never pronounce it 'buh'!

" As a teacher, " a teacher wrote this nonsense?

They've removed the Sparklebox link, thank goodness.

Yes Mrz, was wondering who on earth they'd got to write this nonsense.

What on earth does "learnt by ear" even mean?

I notice that the article also encourages parents to get children to look at the pictures and guess.

I suppose we should be glad that at least it does not tell parents to teach letter names and sing the alphabet song.

I saw your other thread. Thank god they've got rid of the Sparklebox link. But who on Earth wrote the other stuff?
