How to decipher Year 6 SATs scores

DD got 120 in maths, 116 in English and 114 in reading. Those figures are then broken down into individual sections like arithmetic, punctuation etc etc but no explanation for what anything is out of or what it means overall.

How do you work it all out??

The expected national standard is 100 out of 120. A good score is 110 and a high score is classed as 112. In my school a student entering year 7 with 112 or above would be classed as high ability. Your DD did very well in all her tests 🙂

The average this year was 103, 104 and 103 (not sure in what order though), so good results. You should be pleased.

In 2016 110 was considered a "high score" . The "high score" for 2017 hasn't been calculated yet.

In my experience with scores in anything, coming on Mumsnet to ask how to interpret them is a sure fire indicator of excellence.

These are scaled scores not raw scores so, getting a raw score of say 57/ 110 for maths means you have a scaled score of 100 and have achieved national expectations or have 'passed.' As with last year, achieving a scaled score of 110+ should mean working at 'greater depth' or 'exceeding national expectations' because the corresponding raw score will have been ranked to reflect this.

A scale score of 100 or more is the expected mark at the end of Y6 that won't change.
The "high score" is calculated using a bell curve and simply indicates the range of scores in any given year ...

@outgrown, is your DC school in the leafy suburbs so you honestly think she's only average ability in her class?

I imagine your DD's score will be higher than any scores at my DC's pleb school.

We were told papers had marks as follows:

50 marks - English Reading

50 marks - Eng Grammar
20 marks - Eng Spelling

40 marks - Maths arithmetic
35 marks - Maths paper 2 Reasoning
35 marks - Maths paper 3 Reasoning

Well done @outgrown DC. They are excellent scores. Celebrate quietly, achievement in SATs is not to be shouted about. You are only allowed to complain about how unfair they are.

Ours was accompanied by a leaflet reiterating everything in that link. I think most schools did this...

I'm surprised that your school didn't give either you or your child the information that 100 is 'expected level' tbh.

It's unusual to get through Y6 without being provided with that piece of information.

Hey ho, enjoy your daughters success OP and ignore the miseries who would like to suggest this must be a crap school and who to be honest sound jealous.

In my experience, people on these kind of threads DO know the results are good. However, most people only know about their own little school and their own child who is on top table and what they actually want is a bit of wider, broader context. Yes they know their child is doing well, but actually would like to know a bit more - is this brilliant,mor just quite good - how many get the kind of scores their kid got. It's difficult to ask if their child is doing brilliantly, especially when lots of MNers are quick to be negative....so they ask the question in This roundabout way.

Well done Ops child - don't let anyone detract from your pleasure. And if you can't do it on an anonymous forum instead of real life, where can you do it.
