Poor self esteem

Just returned from parents evening. DS - year 6 bright. Full of self doubt, will often say he is stupid, can't do something etc etc. Very high expectations for himself but too hard on himself. Teacher concerned that he has 'panics' which cause writers block and that if he can't do something he will get in a state. What do I do? He is going to our local grammar school and now panicking that it might all just be too much for him - help please

Should add I was similar at primary school except worse, major meltdowns, tantrums. I suspect I have some Asperger traits (even now) not sure if same for him.
