Exeter primary schools

I am wondering how best to find a good primary school for my bright son who swings from being over to under confident. Looking at different sites the stats for results seem to vary and I'm finding it very confusing. I believe ofsted is a very rough guide and to be taken with a pinch of salt. Very keen to find a school sound in teaching English and Maths in particular. We're in the middle of Exeter and in the catchment for St Leonard's. Liked the feel of it, but how do you tell if kids are engaged with lessons and quietly concentrating or daydreaming and switching off like I did. I'm wondering how the school compares with Exewick Heights, Stoke Hill and whether it would be better to relocate somewhere else in Devon. Advice would be fab! Thanks in advance, a panicking mum.
