Reception school report, can someone give me a quick slap?

My DD is a beginning of Setember birthday,so oldest in her year (16 in the year). She moves up into a mixed Y1/Y2 class next term, and I'm worried. She's 'emerging' for pretty much all the academic stuff, either emerging or expected for the other aspects (such as 'understanding', that's at emerging level)

I know she works in a group of 6 for phonics, where the other 10 work in the higer ability group. Of her group, 4 are staying down in the Reception class for another year, and only her and one other girl are going up to the Y1/2 class. I am worried she'll struggle. Listening, staying on task, and obviously reading and writing are all very weak areas for her. I also have twin boys starting the school this September so it's very hard to get 1:1 or focussed time at home. Do I need to worry? Will she manage okay in September? I ahve visions of her and the othe child finding it very hard to keep up in the classroom, and I really don't want her to feel discouraged, or to dislike school. She has found Reception hard, despite being in a small class in a small school- she got very anxious and was hand washing to the point of bleeding earlier in the year. Luckily that seems to be a thing of the past.

Am I just being over-anxious and needing a quick slap to get me to see sense?! Do I need to try and practice anything in particular with her over summer? I do intend to keep looking at some reading books with her. She does really struggle with even simple words, like 'and'

If you've made it this far, thanks for reading.

Can't you ask for her to stay down? Do school know about her anxiety? Poor lamb. Children develop at such different rates but it seems a shame to pit unnecessary pressure on her.

Can I suggest you just have a chat with her teachers about concerns.. My DS has transition worries this year ( completely different to yours) from a 4/5 to a 5. They are very supportive.

Can I also say they are taught in groups and she will be set year 1 work not year 2. I would also add these things tend to just click ..If she is near the bottom of the class at the end of recpetion does not mean she will be in year 1.

I suppose I could ask about her staying down. I wonder if part of the reason she's gone up is her age, as she'll be 6 the week school starts, so nearly 2 years older than some of the new late summer born children, and because it'll give her some space from her brothers. I can ask her teacher (or should I ask next year's teacher? ). I knew she was in the lower ability group but I didn't realise she was only emerging in some categories. There are some very good readers in her class, who've got their books out in the playground and read my dts a story, so I just thought she had a bright cohort, and was at the bottom end. She's 'emerging ' for listening and attention, understanding, moving and handling (does have some motor skill issues ) reading, writing and numbers. Hmm.

I know she'll get year 1 work, but she can barely do tell reception stuff!

I would try to do some things with her over the summer. Could you enlist her support to get your twins ready for school? over the summer she could teach them to could to ten, draw patterns, do some phonics. Can she show them how to sit quietly for a story? Might help her confidence and improve her skills.

My DC is in reception and compared to what I was doing at school when I was 5, It is pretty demanding.

Finally, the new grading is really tough. My DC was top of the class when he started reception and his report now says that he was meeting expectations...

Looking at it from a different perspective, the teacher obviously thinks dd can cope with year one or surely she would be held back with the other children who are struggling.

My dd is also in reception but February born. She's missed 24% of school due to illness and I too worry that year one is going to be a culture shock although she is bright but lazy!
Your dd must be doing ok, I think the pressure on reception is a lot compared to when ds was there 8 yrs ago and our school were recently downgraded so have pushed and pushed our dc, tons of homework etc, one week she came home with 8 books, it's sad really.

If you have twins starting in reception this year then I would imagine the staff want to put your daughter in a different class.
