My poor son just got his first ever below expectations - for ART! Seems a bit mean :(

I came on to say 'it isn't', but clearly it has been for your DS.

He will be assessed in everything in secondary, so you may as well get used to it.

In secondary it seemed to be things like use of shading, drawing textures, awareness of different styles etc.

I don't know but just wanted to come on here and say I got rated "below expectations" for art right through primary school because I wasn't much of a drawer. In fact I wasn't allowed to join Art Club in year 5 as I wasn't good enough- still bitter. Went on to get an A at GCSE and a B at A Level. There's more to art and artistic creativity than drawing a perfect replica of what's in front of you.

None of my DC have ever been assessed for Art in Y6! The report might just say they seem to enjoy/not enjoy certain aspects of art, or they are able to draw/copy/produce a certain type of artistic piece.

Art is such a personal think it does seem mean to mark him in such a way at that age.

A boy in DS's class was given the same and he felt low too so I can sympathise. My DD and DS aren't Arty and got expected level. They all have their strengths. It sounds like your DS is better at subjects such as English/Maths?

Yes, the shame of it is, he loves art and DT (BE for both).

That is hard to take especially if he loves them. Do you have a parents evening to discuss the report?
