2016 SATs English test.

Anyone care to try this quiz to see how they do? Glad my children have passed through the system.

My ds did the test and got 8 out of 10.

Well done! How old is he?

He is year 6 and is 10 .
His teacher had spent a lot of time on the grammar which is why he could answer it.
He is of average ability

This site is a site selling SATS materials, so it is in their interest for you to do badly and then be panicked into buying their stuff.

dd1 came home with practise SATS papers over the Easter holiday. The SPAG one did have questions like this in it, but there were in the minority. Most of the questions were straight forward grammar questions.
So, while there are some ludicrous things in the grammar being taught (what is the past progressive tense? Did that even exist 6 months ago? Didn't it used to be called past continuous?) I don't think it is as bad as this site makes out.

There are many things about the SATS that I don't like, but it isn't a bad thing for our kids to learn grammar.
If you ever intend to learn another language, then you do need to know basic grammar. I went to school in an era when we didn't learn any grammar at all. It has been a major hindrance as I have gone on to live and work in 3 different countries, and learnt the language in each one. It was an uphill struggle to learn basic grammar alongside learning a language.

Most of the things in the SPAG are good things for year 6 aged children to know:

subject verb object in a sentence
what is a noun, verb, adverb, adjective, preposition, connective etc
correct use of punctuation, including commas, colons, semi-colons, full stops etc
understanding question v. statement or command
direct speech v reported speech
active v. passive voice
route words of spelling, prefixes and suffixes
present/past tense
use of standard English
hyphens, brackets, dashes
correct use of capital letters
apostrophes

to me theses things are basic to good written English and should be taught. I have no problem with them.

I got 9/10.

But DD is in y6 so we've been looking at this stuff quite a lot, though quite possibly she would still get 0/10 for the test.

I wondered how many adults would get a good score, rather than the children.

My ds got 70%. He is top set English in year 10 and got level 6s in his year 6 SATS 4 years ago. He didn't understand several of the questions and had to guess!

My DS just got 100%,I wouldn't have done half as well.

I got 4/10. My son is in nursery so not a worry yet. But to balance it out I got 9/10 in maths and got one wrong as I didn't read it properly.

I got 80%. But as English is not my native language and I've never heard of most of the terminology I don't think that's too bad. Quite intuitive and if you've been taught it, it should be doable. I'm sure that DC will score higher than I did when Yr6 arrives looking at what they know now in Yr2.

I got 50% but a bit out of practice and has DS shouting at me in the background so hard to concentrate. I check copy for a living but tend to look for spelling, flow of copy and the grammar tends to get done by intuition I don't tend to think about the absolute grammatical terms as I look at what has been written.
