School lunches

After 5 years of my (extraordinarily fussy) son coming home telling me that he has had "nothing" or "a sandwich" for lunch between 3 and 4 days out of every 5 I have decided to allow him to have packed lunches. However, the headteacher tells me that she needs a "doctor's letter" in order to authorize this. So, I have to make an appointment and waste NHS time in order to get a letter which states that it is better for my son to eat something than nothing at lunch each day! Talk about stating the bleeding obvious.
It is a state Catholic primary school - is she within her rights to require this? Or is she just making up rules? If so, I am tempted to get one of our friends with a PhD to write a letter.

What?! A doc's letter to simply take a packed lunch? Really??

I've never heard of that. We can swap between the two as we wish.

Very odd.

Parents choice of packed lunch or school dinners at all 6 of our local schools. I know as I asked when looking at reception places. School dinners are not cheap and many choose packed lunches as cheaper as well as your issue. My friend was advised to put her 5 yr old on packed lunches as she never ate her hot dinner!!!

Is it a whole school having school dinners school?

I'd send him in with a packed lunch. Surely if she doesn't let him eat it then there would be grounds for a complaint.

Yes my school has this. The whole school has school lunches except 5 children of which three are mine. There is nothing wrong with my kids but the food was too poor in quantity and quality for me to justify the £1.85 for each child. I took them to the doctors and explained about needing a doctors note. I looked at me like I was crazy then wrote me a note saying that they should have packed lunches. We are all much happier, fuller and richer now. Good luck.
