Hi can some one explain what secure level refers to at reception.

It refers to the level they've reached - if a child is secure at say level 2a, they are working comfortably at that level and heading for the next.

Depends on how the particular county or school splits up the age-related expectation 'bands' to show progress over the year.

In ours, a child could be said to be
"Working within" a band (eg, 30-50 months) if, looking at the "development matters" statements, the best fit for the child is that there is evidence for some of the statements in this band.

"Secure" if, looking at the "development matters" statements, the best fit for the child is that there is strong evidence for most (if not all) of the statements, with a lot being 'child initiated' & occurring multiple times - ie, they are SECURE and CONFIDENT.

They'd then move on from "secure 30-50" to "working within 40-60+", then the same for the ELGs.

Some counties use "Entering" "Developing" and "Securing" sub-bands instead.


At the end of the reception year, the terminology changes again and for each of the areas of learning, the child will be assessed as
"Emerging" "Expected" or "Exceeding" the Early Learning Goals.
