Since the start of Y2 DS has been given 2 reading books a week, but as they have got longer and more complex he has struggled to get through the sheer volume of reading now expected. Even if he only hands one book in on a Friday, he is still given two more for the next week.
He reads to me for 20-30 minutes every day, but rarely choses to read them to himself. He does read books of his own chosing to himself, but not every day. We are encouraged to listen and ask comprehension questions. He also gets literacy and numeracy homework weekly.
His school books for the last few weeks have been:
Jack Stalwart Egypt
Booom! by Alan MacDonald
Whiff Erik
A couple of Danger Zone books
Hooey and the Great Boat Race
They are all quite long (120+ pages, 10 chapters, fairly dense text and few illustrations). DS generally gets through 2 chapters a day - he reads well, with fluency, and good comprehension.
Are your Y2 DC expected to read this amount every week too?
