Play dates

My son struggles a bit with social interactions with his peers. He hangs about on the peripheral of groups of boys in his class but doesn't seem to know how to initiate play.

He is in reception and I know a few of the mums. Do you think I should invite their sons round for 1:1 play dates after school or in the holidays? Or should I just wait it out and see how he gets on with making friends by himself?

Ask him which ones he particularly likes, also think about the mums you like

Yes it can definitely help. Being 1:1 with another dc helps. Also, if they're struggling with what to play, initiate something for them. Once they start having a good time together, it gets easier.

Yes, 1 to 1 will be great for him and build confidence.

I've done this in the past as ds1 isn't a social butterfly. He's very happy with his friends, but uncomfortable around new children.

Reception is still quite young too for some mums to be happy leaving their dc with a stranger, so for the first time, you may need to invite mum or a coffee too.

Not always the case, just what I've experienced.
