5-year old DD loves drawing, should I send him to an art class/club?

However I could not find an art class/club locally. There are football classes, dancing classes, swimming classes, piano classes, chess clubs and all sorts. But I could not find any art classes/clubs. Is it too early to start to learn to draw?

We have an afterschool art club from yr 1. Our yr 2 girls loves it, is mixture of boys and girls. Great because they do less of the art type stuff after reception where they can spend half the day doing junk modelling. I would enquire if there is an afterschool art club, if not maybe volunteer to help run one. We pay a pound a week for equipment. For drawing it self there are books you can buy but at the moment my girls seem happoier to draw their own representations than any formal learning drawing techniques.

My son is also great at drawing. He's only reception now, but from next year he can go to art club at school if he wants. Can you get your school to start one?

just make sure she has lots of pencils and paper and let her draw. You could get her some different media - chalks, pastels etc. Mine all love drawing but apart from school have never belonged to a club as such. You could take her to some art galleries as well if you want to encourage a love of art.

Be there to sharpen her pencils and let her get with it herself.

Usborne do a lot of really good 'art activity' books which introduce children to a wide variety of art techniques. Have a look for some in the bookshop, get piles of art materials, and prepare for your house to be prepetually a bit messy!

Yes, I think there is a market for this type of club too. Keep trying to persuade my amazingly arty friend to do it. We'd be her first customers.

Thanks everyone. I will try some Usborne books and provide plenty of pens and papers. As school club only availabel for year 2 children and above.

I have started to take my DD to art galleries as they also run monthly art classes. I am not sure where you are in the country but most art galleries do it once a month or even more. Most art galleries link the sessions to the exhibitions so the children look at the work and then have a go themselves.

My Y2 and Y1 children love going and we find they are generally free or a voluntary contribution is asked for and very undersubscribed - at least where we are!
