Writing "Award" / book publication fund raising thingy - what it is called?

What was that fund rasing rip off that had so many MNs hot under a collar a little while ago? Can anyone remember the name of the company that runs it?

What happens is that the children "win" a prize which is publication of "their" work in a book - which parents then have to buy!

I think our school is doing the same thing and I would very much like to nip it in the bud if that is the case!

Anyone? Please? A friend of mine is SO proud of her daughter getting one of these certificates and seems to believe it 100%. I don't think that I should burst her bubble, but if this con is moving into DS's school, I do want to stop it.
(DS is in the infant feeder school and friend's DD is in the adjacent middle school).

Young Writers

Your'e told you've 'won', but everyone in whole class gets same letter. The ones who get published are only the ones who pay. Got taken in at primary (though it made dd soooo happy when she was going through a rough patch so I coughed up). Just had another for ds and it went straight in bin. Haven't even told him.

Thanks, GrungeBlogPrimpants! Yes, it is the very same Young Writers. It gives parents the wrong kind of assurance that all is well with their kid's writing, but as you point out, it is only those that pay that get published.

Definitely going to raise it with our Head because I have seen some "riddle" books in DS's library and I think it is from the same people.
