DD is 6 next month and really progressing well with ORT - finds stage 5 easy to the point of being bored and ready for stage 6 according to her, overworked and inexperienced but lovely, teacher. The books make me want to jump off a cliff but I am trying to keep these opinions to myself since she enjoys the achievement Grin

I do not give a monkeys about stages or pushing her to achieve National Curriculum goals. I do want her to develop further her love of reading for its own sake and not for academic purposes. But most of the books we've got are still the big picture style ones. What sort of things can I get her for her to read and for me to read to her at bedtime that will set her imagination on fire. I am going to ask at the local library too but the staff aren't that approachable in general. I'll have a look on google but any input from experienced primary teachers really appreciated. Smile

Not a teacher but mum to a 6 yr old.

For you to read aloud
Faraway tree - really imaginative
Paddington Bear
Swallows & Amazons
Little house on the prairie - there are short ones available

For her to try
Dr Seuss - the easy ones with red backs

Oh god The Faraway Tree - I loved that as a child, ditto Paddington. Off to Amazon now. We had a Dr Seuss bath book - she is bonkers has an offbeat sense of humour so that's great. Thanks so much

For you to read to her: some of the Roald Dahl books maybe? My ds1 (5) enjoys The Twits, The Enormous Crocodile, Fantastic Mr Fox and George's Magical Medicine. Does she enjoy factual books?

My dd is 6.1 and currently loves Roald Dahl, Secret Sevens and Worst Witch books. She didn't really like the Faraway tree - not entirely sure why!
